The Frator Heru Institute is an island of vitality in a deeply stressed community, providing services that are entirely relevant to the people who live there. Their large corps of extremely dedicated volunteers take its performance and potential far beyond what its budget might indicate--it's really true that they've been doing so much for so long (26 years!) with so little that now they can do anything with nothing! I wish all community organizations were as well organized and relevant.
Since I was first introduced to the Frator Heru Institutes approach to education I was amazed and have stayed involved. Being in an atmosphere of individuals who are as loving as they are knowledgeable is a very rare experience. I started in a one day discussion about Black male development and was intrigued enough to find out what other courses and trainings I could get involved with. A year and a half later I am now on the board and a consistent supporter of FHI. The relationships built and pursuit of the betterment of our community has been an invaluable experience.
I have been involved formally since the winter 2009.I attended the Male Rites of Paggage program and was very impressed with their program. I made a personal donation for the program. The organization volunteered to host my youth program when our summer site fell through. The volunteer staff opened up the facilities every day for six weeks. They were on time and sensitive to our staff and youth. We believe this is a very good community agency and needs more support.
I love the staff at the Frator Heru Institute! Each member brings something different to the table, which reflects in the diversity of the class offerings. It's clear they are committed to the community and each individual who walks through their door. This program just might be one of Philadelphia's best kept secrets!
My review may seem to be biased at first but I feel it is necessary to share with others my personal experinec with The Frator Heru Institute and how it has changed my life. I first became involved with the FHI through its Founder,Mr. Yumy Odom through his work at Temple University and Arcadia University. Mr. Odom is a consumate educator and professional, making himself and his knowledge accessible to each of his students while encouraging excellence in everyone he encounters. This encouragement is what motivated me to dig deeper within myself and strive for my greatest potential. Through my involvement with Mr. Odom and the FHI, I have gone on to Facilitate classes in Human Race Studies and Rites of Passage for Young Men. I have developed a range of skills that I would have never know existed within me, had it not been for the FHI and the other dynamic individuals who make up its staff and board. Today as I sit here as the Vice-Chairman of The Frator Heru Institute, I can proudly be a testament to the outstanding work that everyone at the FHI has done and is continued to be committed to. It is within this family-like organization that each person, regardless of age or status in life can achieve their highest potential. I, for one am grateful for The Frator Heru institute!
